Revival of Indian Hockey
India is one of the premier hockey playing nations and India’s national sports. Eight time Olympic gold medallist, India, had failed to qualify for the Beijing Games last year. This was the first time since 1928 when field hockey was introduced as a medal sport. With this regard, Australian foreign minister said that Australia will train promising India field hockey players to enable the beleaguered former champions regain their old glory.
Minister Stephen Smith said, “All hockey playing nations, including Australia, want India to return to its historic place as a great hockey playing nation.” He announced the establishment of the ‘Australia-India Council Hockey Scholarships’ for young players and coaches. Three scholarships will be given every year to one male player, one female player and one coach. They will train at the AIS elite national hockey program in Perth.
